Aquatic plant and algae problems, as stated, are typically caused by increased nutrients in the pond. This could be due to build up of organic matter (sludge) on the bottom, fertilizers (mostly Phosphorus and Nitrogen) leaching into the pond, Common pond debris (such as fish feces, fallen leaves and invasive pond weeds) can also add to the nutrient level in the water.
During this, Algae use sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce energy and oxygen as a byproduct. However, during the night when there is not sunlight, the plants use up oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. Therefore, oxygen levels drop all during the night in the pond and could harm fish and overall water quality. Also, when the plants die off, the oxygen levels drop drastically over a short period of time. When the plants die, bacteria begin to decompose the organic material and use up oxygen quickly and causing the overall dissolved oxygen in the pond or lake to drop.
